Homemaker in purple, for sale on my etsy!

Most of my work centers around the Cold War; the history, the politicians, the space race, the arms race, the scientists, the policies and the movements. I feel making this work about a war that ended the year I was born was natural for me. I already have a fascination with psychology and what makes us as individuals who we are and why we act the way we do- why not try to discover why the world I live in does the things it does and why culturally we act the way we do?
While I made these piece I was thinking about the sudden panic that seemed to take place in the 1950s when women, who for the past decade had been given jobs in industry, were suddenly shoved back into the ‘home’. Suddenly being the perfect feminine wife and mother was paramount- and what art for is more feminine then hand stitching? And what could possibly on anyones mind more in the 1950s then the atomic bomb?
New listing! I will also have other embroidered items posted soon…

When I tell people I embroider lots of times I hear “I would love to learn!” or if they see my work they ask me how its so neat, or if I have any tips.
Honestly I dont have many tips, most of what I have done recently is just the simplest stitching possible but I think my greatest secret has always been to keep the back of my work is clean, simple and neat as possible… I always know where my next stich is going to be, not only are my stitches small but they are never far apart and I try to move across my fabric once and dont criss-cross back and forth. It keeps my thread from getting tangled too much and keeps me from getting frustrated.

New Etsy logo made for my shop by Darrin Higgins, thank you!
